What to See in Varenna in One Day: A Guide to the Jewel of Lake Como

Varenna is one of the most beautiful villages on Lake Como. Located at the crossroads of the two branches of the lake, Varenna enjoys an unparalleled romantic atmosphere. Small alleys, enchanting views, and a scenic lakefront will take your breath away. All around you, the grandeur of villas and gardens. Above you, the Castle of Vezio, offering one of the best views of Lake Como.

Varenna is impossible to describe in words. As you stroll through its alleys, you’ll be immersed in the elegant and relaxed atmosphere of this little gem. Walk along the Lovers’ Walk suspended over the lake. Take a break by the small port. Discover what to do and see in Varenna in one day.

I don’t remember the first time I saw Varenna. But every time I return, I feel like that enthusiastic little girl playing with pebbles on the shore again.

I can’t help but take at least one (okay, maybe more!) photo on the stone steps or walk again along the suspended promenade over the lake.

I hope this post inspires you to visit Varenna and find it as beautiful as I see it!

A Bit of History

Like other villages on Lake Como, Varenna began as a fishing village. Of Celtic origin, it was fortified by the Romans and Lombards.

It sided with Milan in the wars of the communes and became a refuge for the exiles of Isola Comacina, defeated by the people of Como in 1169.

Under feudal rule by the Visconti and Sforza families, Varenna grew into a wealthy and flourishing center on Lake Como.

Did You Know?

On June 24, the feast of Saint John is celebrated. A fireworks show on Isola Comacina re-enacts the battle between Como and the island’s inhabitants. The following evening in Varenna, the Lumaghitt festival is held. Floating candles are placed on the lake to commemorate the boats fleeing from Isola Comacina to Varenna.

What to See in Varenna

Facing Bellagio across the lake, Varenna is in the province of Lecco. It’s a picturesque place for a pleasant day trip. Once a fishing village, Varenna has become an elegant holiday destination.

Though small, Varenna’s true charm lies in the magical, romantic atmosphere. However, there are several must-see attractions during your visit.

Lovers’ Walk

A scenic path connects the Olivedo district with the historic center. If you arrive in Varenna by ferry, you’ll disembark here.

Olivedo already exudes a holiday vibe. Here you’ll find hotels like the Liberty-style Hotel Olivedo and a small harbor with local fishing boats, including the traditional wooden Lucie.

The Lovers’ Walk starts here: Varenna’s most romantic attraction. The path runs along the lakeside, clinging to the rocky cliff.

The walkway is suspended over the lake, supported by a red metal structure. Flowers and plants grow along the railing.

As you walk toward town, you’ll see colorful houses, a small harbor, and in the distance, the tower of Castle Vezio.

Historic Center

The most beautiful part of Varenna’s historic center is undoubtedly the lakefront. Here you’ll find cafes, terraces, and restaurants that will instantly put you in vacation mode.

Colorful houses and cobbled stone alleys climbing uphill create postcard views, with the shimmering lake as a peaceful backdrop.

After exploring the shops and relaxing by the lake, venture into the alleys to discover the lesser-known side of Varenna.

Climb the stairs toward the main square, Piazza San Giorgio, home to Varenna’s main churches.

Church of San Giorgio

Of Roman origin, this church was built over the remains of a Roman temple. The current building dates back to the 13th century and is in Lombard medieval style.

Its exterior is simple and unadorned, but inside you’ll find fascinating frescoes.

Church of San Giovanni Battista

This is Varenna’s oldest church, dating to the 11th century, and one of the oldest on Lake Como.

It features a Romanesque design with a gabled structure and an apse facing the square. Built of rough stone blocks, it has a rustic charm.

The interior holds 14th-century frescoes. Though many are worn, their vivid colors still impress.

The church isn’t always open; check with the nearby tourist office for hours.

Villa Monastero

One of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como. If you’re in Varenna, you must visit it and its gardens.

The villa hosts a museum and congress center, but the botanical garden is the highlight. You can walk through 2 km of tree-lined paths, discovering both local and exotic plant species.

Villa Cipressi

Near Villa Monastero, Villa Cipressi is now a hotel, so its interiors aren’t open to the public. However, you can visit its lush and elegant gardens.

The garden terraces offer panoramic lake views. The namesake cypresses lead you to peaceful green corners.

You can visit both villas separately, but a combined ticket is available at a discounted rate.

Castle of Vezio

This medieval fortress overlooks Varenna from the village of Perledo. Its panoramic viewpoint offers breathtaking views of Lake Como, especially during fiery summer sunsets.

With Celtic origins, the castle was expanded by the Romans in the 5th century BC. Like other Lake Como towns, settlements formed around the castle during feudal times.

Reachable on foot from Perledo or by car if short on time, the castle also features olive groves and a falconry school. For more, see the dedicated post about the Castle of Vezio.

Fiumelatte

Italy’s shortest river at just 250 meters long and active only half the year—from late March to early October. During high flow, its frothy water looks like milk, hence the name.

Leonardo da Vinci studied this phenomenon and mentioned it in his Codex Atlanticus.

Located in the nearby hamlet of Fiumelatte, it’s accessible by a short walk to its source and a scenic picnic area.

Hiking in Varenna

The trail to Fiumelatte is part of the Sentiero del Viandante, a hiking route connecting towns along the eastern shore of Lake Como.

For a shorter and gentler option, take the Greenway dei Patriarchi, a scenic path suitable for all walkers and offering great views.

In Conclusion

Though the main sights in Varenna can be seen in a day, a boat ride on the lake or a sunny afternoon at the lido make Varenna perfect for a relaxing weekend getaway.
