Cernobbio
Cernobbio – The Refined Soul of Lake Como
Nestled between lake and mountain, Cernobbio is more than just a pretty lakeside town—it’s a lifestyle. I’ve lived on Como Lake for years, and I am never tired of its elegance and intimacy. This is where morning walks begin with mist over the lake and where every alley seems to tell a story.
In just one weekend, you can sip espresso at the lakefront Piazza Risorgimento, stroll through the peaceful gardens of Villa Erba, and dine above the clouds at Il Gatto Nero. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike up to Monte Bisbino for jaw-dropping views, or take a scenic ferry ride to Bellagio or Moltrasio.
But Cernobbio’s real charm isn’t just in its views—it’s in its rhythm. It’s the casual icecream by the lake, the church bells, the soft light of an alpine sunset, and the warmth of a town that hasn’t lost its soul to tourism.
Tip: How to get to Cernobbio
Cernobbio is just a few kilometers from the city of Como and easily reachable by car, bus, ferry, or even on foot from Como’s lakefront (around 45 minutes). If you’re coming from Milan, take a train to Como San Giovanni and then bus line C10 toward Menaggio or the ferry from Como pier.
Ferries are scenic but often crowded—especially in summer and on weekends. A smart alternative is to reach Cernobbio by car or bus and then catch the ferry from there, skipping the long queues in Como. All you need is a bit of patience… and a hat.
Check ferry schedules on the official Navigazione Lago di Como website.
Your visit will start from Piazza Risorgimento, the town’s social heart. The lakeside promenade is the place where to relax having a coffee or an icecream, looking at the lake or waiting for the ferry.
Cernobbio also has a very romantic downtown with cobblestone alleys and some restaurants where to eat local dishes. Moreover there are also less known part of Cernobbio, such as Piazza Santo Stefano that are the perfect starting point for trekking and hiking.
Speaking of elegance instead, Cernobbio hosts many beautiful villas. The most known of them is for sure Villa d’Este, a massive 16th-century building now turned as a luxury hotel with amazing gardens. The residence often hosts events and award ceremonies.
Curiosity: Villa d’Este
Villa d’Este was originally built as a summer residence for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio and became a luxury hotel in 1873. Today, it’s one of the world’s most celebrated historic hotels.
Another well known place is Villa Erba, a neoclassical manor with a huge park and exposure centre. Here too concerts, exhibitions and fairs take place – in a very refined area just lakefront.
But in Cernobbio you will also find Villa Pizzo with terraced gardens and Villa Bernasconi, a milestone to discover the history of Como district silk industry.
Tip: Where to dine in Cernobbio
Head to Il Gatto Nero for dinner at sunset: perched on the hills, it offers one of the most romantic views over the lake and Cernobbio’s rooftops.
This small village has a lot to offer, however, according to those who live in these areas, the real wealth of Cernobbio lies in its ability to make you feel at home and relax without having to plan everything but gradually savouring what you see.
Come for the beauty. Stay for the peace. Cernobbio is Lake Como’s hidden whisper—and once you hear it, you won’t want to leave.
