Villa d’Este
Sailing on Lake Como: a journey to Villa d’Este
Sailing on Lake Como is a magical experience. Approaching Villa d’Este by boat makes it even more special. Our Scent of Travel team chose to arrive aboard a classic Meteor, a prized sailboat from the area. The lake’s breeze and sparkling water create a perfect setting.
Curiosity: The winds of Lake Como
Two typical winds blow on the lake. The Tivano comes from the north, bringing fresh and gentle breezes in the morning. Later in the day, the Breva arrives from the south with warm and lively air. Local sailors know these winds well—they are the invisible engines of sailing days.
Villa d’Este stands out with its elegant neoclassical facade and panoramic terraces. However, private boats cannot dock directly at the villa. This rule ensures safety during important events or visits by VIP guests.
Tip: How to visit Villa d’Este
The best way to admire the villa is from the lake by boat. Then, dock at the small harbor of Cernobbio. A short walk from there leads you close to the villa. Keep in mind that the hotel is open only to guests or during special events, but the exterior and gardens are still worth seeing.
Alternatively, you can reach Villa d’Este by car, parking in Cernobbio and walking a few minutes to the site.
The villa was built between 1565 and 1570 by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio. It has undergone many changes over the centuries. In 1873, it became a luxury hotel but kept its aristocratic charm. Since then, it has welcomed many famous visitors and hosted international events.
The gardens at Villa d’Este are considered masterpieces of Italian landscape design. Terraces, fountains, and statues offer stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
